You Are Apple Of My Eye (2024)

The romantic tale of the Taiwanese film "You Are the Apple of My Eye," a huge success, has been remade in Korea. Based on a novel that was later adapted into a film, the film is set during a high school student's love for a popular girl at his school.

PLOT SUMMARY

The story centers on four unlikely individuals from a small town: Kang Min-ho (Kim Do-hyun) as a smart but lazy troublemaker, Park Se-ra (Go Min-ji) as a disciplined model student who is the object of many people's admiration, Choi Joon-woo as Min-ho's goofy best friend, and Lee Hye-rin as Se-ra's realistic friend.

Their ordinary school life changes drastically when Min-ho and Se-ra are assigned deskmates as punishment for Min-ho's misbehavior. From there, the story of Min-ho and Se-ra begins as a romance from their school days, then their university entrance, the many challenges they face, and the quarrels that lead to their separation.

REVIEW

The best part of "You Are the Apple of My Eye" lies in its comedy and chemistry. Director Lee Na-won manages to bring a sense of humor to the film, especially through its main characters. The film's resemblance to the universal nostalgia of first love will delight viewers longing for their school days.

Go Min-ji as Park Se-ra is the star of the show. In all her elegance, she conveys a strong yet fragile charm, with dialogue and mannerisms that make her come to life and far from being a cliché. Kim Do-hyun also gives a standout performance as Min-ho, a troublemaker with a heart of gold who gradually softens in the world of romance.

The only criticism of the film is that the transition to adulthood storyline feels a bit too rushed, with the film spending quite a bit of time in the beginning before the characters truly face their breakups and reunions in the real world. However, once the emotional adventure begins, the pace of the film becomes fast-paced and entertaining, concluding with a wedding that harnesses creativity and sincerity, reminiscent of unforgettable true love.

CAST

  • Kim Do-hyun - Kang Min-ho (The Troublemaker)

  • Go Min-ji - Park Se-ra (The Exemplary Schoolgirl)

  • Choi Joon-woo - Min-ho's best friend

  • Lee Hye-rin - Se-ra's friend

IS IT WORTH IT?

Overall, You Are the Apple of My Eye (Korean Version) is the best adaptation film from the visuals, acting from the cast to the storyline that makes me want to watch it again if there is a part two.

Rating: 8.5/10
