Synopsis

In a distant future, humanity tries to colonize the icy, hostile planet Niflheim. To survive, they rely on “Expendables”—workers who can die and be regenerated in new bodies, memories included. Enter Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), currently on his 17th version, who survives a mission that should’ve killed him. The colony assumes he’s dead and already printed Mickey 18, causing two identical men with the same memories—and very different personalities—to clash in a chaotic battle for identity, purpose, and survival.

Mickey 17 is Bong Joon-ho doing what he does best: mixing genres that shouldn’t work together, yet somehow feel seamless. This film jumps between dark comedy, existential sci-fi, political satire, and emotional drama—sometimes within the same scene.

What the Movie Nails

  • Robert Pattinson delivers one of his best performances
Playing two versions of the same man, Pattinson switches between confused, sarcastic, broken, and hopeful—often in the same conversation.

  • Weird, bold world-building
Niflheim feels cold, oppressive, and visually striking. The production design, alien creatures, and cloning tech all look fascinating without over-explaining.

  • Smart themes without losing entertainment
The movie dives into identity, exploitation, and the idea of humans as "replaceable labor." It’s thought-provoking but still very watchable.

Where It Stumbles

  • Tone is very Bong Joon-ho — which may not be for everyone
One moment you’re laughing, the next you’re watching something grim or disturbing. The shifts can feel abrupt.

  • A bit too chaotic in the middle
The narrative meanders as the movie juggles sci-fi exposition, political satire, and character drama.

Still, even its messy parts are interesting in a “wow, only Bong would do this” way.

Final Thoughts

Mickey 17 isn’t a clean, traditional sci-fi blockbuster—it's stranger, more personal, and more daring. The film pushes you to think about what makes a life meaningful and what it means to be human… even when there are 18 of you walking around.

If you’re into unique sci-fi with personality, humor, and philosophical bite, this one’s absolutely worth your time.
