Superman is a superhero film from the United States based on DC Comics, directed by James Gunn. This Superman movie is a reboot and part of a new era in the DC Universe ("DCU"). The film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, alongside Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Moner in supporting roles.

Plot

The story begins with Superman successfully stopping the invasion of Brovania (an ally of the United States). However, he later faces his first defeat against a metahuman known as the "Hammer of Boravia." The Hammer of Boravia is a robot controlled by Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), whose goal is to study Superman’s fighting style.

Throughout several scenes, we see Superman struggling against the various invasions orchestrated by Lex Luthor, making him overwhelmed by the enemy’s attacks. Behind the chaos, the film also explores the personal side of Clark Kent, which is rarely highlighted on the big screen. There are moments when Clark feels he isn’t enough to save everyone, even doubting whether he truly deserves to be called “the hope of humanity.” These doubts are worsened by Lex Luthor’s propaganda, which continuously attempts to sway public opinion to view Superman as a threat rather than a hero.

Amidst the turmoil, Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) plays a crucial role in supporting Superman. She is not just a damsel waiting to be saved but a smart, critical, and courageous figure who stands beside Clark both as a journalist and as his partner. Their dialogues bring a warm emotional layer amidst the epic battles.

The climactic battle showcases an epic scene where Superman must face an upgraded version of the Hammer of Boravia after the robot has absorbed data from all their previous fights. Superman nearly faces defeat, but with encouragement from those around him, he rises and manages to destroy the Hammer’s energy core.

Review

Positive points from the Superman movie:
  • Symbol of Hope

In this film, Superman is portrayed as a true symbol of hope for humanity. He is not only shown as a powerful superhero but also as a compassionate individual. This is seen in how he helps even the smallest creatures without hesitation, displays humor toward those around him, and speaks gently when interacting with others. All of this reinforces that Superman is not just a protector of the world but also a source of inspiration and hope for mankind.

  • The crazy scientist
Lex Luthor’s intelligence is mesmerizing, to the point where even Superman struggles to handle him. Yet, beyond his villainous role, Lex is portrayed not merely as someone who wants to eliminate Superman but as someone who wants to prove that human intelligence itself can be a powerful force in protecting the world.
  • Visual effects

The film feels grand in scale: its effects, super-powered action sequences, cityscapes, and enemies all resemble the grandeur of a true blockbuster. There are spectacular moments that truly dazzle the eyes.

Negative points from the Superman movie:

  • Weak Camera Angles

In some flying scenes, the camera angles feel a bit stiff, which reduces the sense of immersion for the audience.

  • Underwhelming Villain
At the start, Lex Luthor appears as a convincing and dangerous threat to Superman. However, toward the end, his strategies seem to run out of steam. As a result, Lex, who was initially portrayed as cunning and intimidating, becomes less menacing, making the final battle feel somewhat less impactful.

Is it worth it ?

YesSuperman (2025) is absolutely worth watching because it successfully presents a different version of Superman compared to past adaptations. He’s not just a superhero with extraordinary powers, but also a man named Clark Kent with doubts, emotions, and vulnerabilities. This difference is what makes the film feel refreshing.
