Hacksaw Ridge Movie Review

Poster film Hacksaw Ridge

Hacksaw Ridge is a 2016 biographical war drama film directed by Mel Gibson. It tells the incredible true story of Desmond Doss, an American combat medic who refused to carry or use a weapon during World War II due to his religious beliefs. The film was widely praised and won 2 Academy Awards from its 6 nominations.

The Personal Struggle of Desmond Doss

The film carefully builds Desmond Doss's character from his early life in Virginia. We see how an incident with his brother and his father's World War I trauma permanently instilled the principle of "Thou shalt not kill" in his soul.

Desmond felt compelled to serve his nation when World War II started, albeit as a physician rather than a combat soldier. This choice, which many found odd and cowardly, became into the primary point of contention during boot camp. Sergeant Howell (played by Vince Vaughn) and his fellow soldiers taunted, threatened, and even physically assaulted him. But Desmond was not going to give up. He even had to defend his beliefs in front of a court-martial. His steadfast determination is a real example of moral bravery.

Hell on the Cliff (Hacksaw Ridge)

After his personal struggle, Desmond Doss and his unit were sent to Okinawa, Japan, where they faced the most brutal battle. Mel Gibson does not shy away from showing the horrors of war explicitly. The combat scenes on the Maeda Escarpment (dubbed Hacksaw Ridge) are incredibly intense and realistic.

This is the most challenging part. We see Desmond, unarmed, moving through a hail of bullets and explosions. When his comrades were forced to retreat, he was the last to leave, ensuring no one was left behind. On the top of the ridge, Desmond Doss truly became a hero. Alone, he searched for the wounded soldiers one by one. He held his breath, crawled, and even confronted the enemy to save lives. He managed to save 75 soldiers, proving that true courage is not measured by how many enemies you kill, but by how many lives you save.

Acting Performance and The Film's Message

The success of Hacksaw Ridge is inseparable from its outstanding acting. Andrew Garfield portrays Desmond Doss with great empathy, presenting a naive and shy character with incredible inner strength. This role is one of the best of his career.

As a director, Mel Gibson shows his genius in orchestrating epic war scenes while maintaining focus on Desmond's personal story. The violence in the film is not gratuitous; it serves to highlight how extraordinary Desmond's actions were in an inhuman situation. The film teaches us that a hero doesn't always come with a weapon. A hero can be an unarmed man with an unwavering conviction.

Hacksaw Ridge is a monument to courage, faith, and humanity. It is a powerful reminder that principles and integrity are a far greater force than physical strength. If you are looking for a film that touches the soul, Hacksaw Ridge is a perfect choice that will make you reflect on the true meaning of courage and humanity.

Final Review and My Opinion

After watching this film, I can state with confidence that Hacksaw Ridge is among the greatest war movies ever produced. Instead of glorifying violence or war, it puts human values at the forefront. The film brilliantly reaches our innermost thoughts about what sacrifice and constancy imply through the story of Desmond Doss.

The way the movie accurately contrasts the unimaginable cruelty with the amazing human deeds is, in my opinion, its most striking feature. In addition to feeling tight and shocked, you will also feel deeply motivated. Andrew Garfield's portrayal of Desmond Doss is so fascinating that it's difficult to tell him apart.

This film is not just something to watch; it's an educational and inspiring experience. It's a powerful wake-up call that reminds us that principles are a far greater force than physical strength. Hacksaw Ridge is a strong reminder that true courage is often found not in battle, but in the steadfastness to remain true to yourself, even in the midst of hell.

So, if you are looking for a film that will make you reflect, shed a tear, and feel inspired, don't miss Hacksaw Ridge. This film is a masterpiece that will be remembered for years to come.
